Lemmings

Abertay University in Dundee was the first university in the world to offer a degree course in computer games design. Dundee has long been home to a burgeoning games design sector.

One of the city's earliest successes was with a game called Lemmings, made by DMA Design. The game sold over 20 million copies in the early 1990s.  So this year, the city decided to commemorate the industry and Lemmings in particular with the installation of a piece of public art.

Quietly, without any fanfare, these cute little lemmings appeared on a pillar at the entrance to a local park, near where DMA Design had their offices.

Trying to save the little lemmings before the time ran out was always fun!

I love that we don't just do statues to real people in Dundee.

We also have statues to comic book characters made famous in DC Thomson's comics, published in Dundee since the 1930s.....The Beano and The Dandy. This includes a statue of Desperate Dan and his dog and Minnie the Minx.

That is so interesting Di. I don't know anything about computer games as I was too busy with babies then, but I do think those statues are awfully cute!

I will have to tell Nathaniel about this-- he'll think the college and the sculptures are pretty cool! (So do I!)
