Woollie - Baby Blankets

I was asked what I made my baby blankets from, so I thought I would oblige.

I use pre-felt that I buy at the fabulous Twist Fibre Craft (they will ship!) It's a cream merino fabric - you could also dye it but I prefer to leave it cream, though I guess sometimes that cream is not the best colour for a baby!

I put it in the washing machine at 30 degrees and out comes the felted fabric (it shrinks by about half) - all bumpy and soft and lovely.

Then I cut shapes - a large piece for the blanket and smaller shapes for the flaps, handles and tags before I start embroidering. Normally I have an idea of where I am going with the blankie design but I don't have the whole picture in my mind when I start. It just sort of evolves along the way!

That is such a brilliant little blanket! It looks like the sort of thing that a child could grow quite attached to and carry everywhere with him!

Dear Di,

I am so happy having one of these treasures in my home! Interresting reading about how you´re making them. I wonder if one could buy second hand wool-sweatters and schrink them in the washing-machine and get felt out of them to use in the same way??? (maybe?)

CONGRATULATIONS, Di (much too late) to your one year anniversery! I thought you had been here alot longer!

A HUG to you!

thanks for sharing the how-to. I just love this one you show here- birds and trees and dog.

I love these blankets you make; you should sell them. It's nice to have a natural play/blanket for a wee one, rather than a something plastic.
