WANDERINGS - DANISH CHRISTMAS SHOP

On Sunday I went with friends to the Danish Christmas Shop which is open for 10 weeks every year in the run up to Christmas in an old school in a small village north of Dundee. It is run by a Danish lady, Paula, and her husband and is always full of fanastic Christmas charm! You can eat Danish food in the cafe - our favourite is always the Danish donuts (Æbleskiver) always served with jam and sugar and a mug of hot spiced apple juice. Then it is time to wander into the magical Christmas shop with it's Danish decorations - always beautifully displayed and certainly worth the visit!

It was such a glorious day, cold and crisp with blue blue skies. The trees are holding onto their leaves and they are the most amazing shades of yellow and orange so the drive to Farnell was lovely, passing beech hedges of orange, ploughed fields, tree skeletons silhouetted against the skyline. (Sorry some of the pictures are a little blurry!)

I bought one thing for me! I have been eyeing up the Nisse (Danish pixies - Tomte is Swedish) for a couple of years now (I do have a pattern to make one from Marie Claire Idees but I have had that pattern for 3 years and it has never happened) so this year, with some of my birthday money I decided to buy one. The next question was - a boy or a girl, and then what should they be wearing - the decisions were tough. At one point I was wandering about with 3 different ones!! But finally......

I love Danish Christmas items. We have family living in Denmark and I have often been there, but never at Christmas time.

He he he, I had to smile (being a Dane) at such jubilations ;-)
Well to be honest, I really like our Christmas traditions and decorations and food too, so I can understand you! By the way, Æbleskiver should be served with glögg (a hot drink with spices and redwine!)

This is odd, but I bought the exact same Nisse from Fjorn (I can't remember his name now)-we have twins. I am so jealous that you have this store to visit. My Grandfather was from Denmark and I have been slowly adding Danish Christmas decorations when I can find them. Thank you for sharing these pictures.

Your day at the Dansih Christmas house must have been so much fun. I think the nisse (also in norwegian) looks great.

How complicated is the pattern in Marie Claire? What issue is it in?

My husband grew up with Nisse men from his Danish grandmother, and he is always wanting me to make some, but I can never find a pattern.

He's very cute - you know all sorts of places to visit. I was up in St Andrews the weekend before last with HOURS to kill and nothing much to do. Luckily enough there was a Christmas fair on in the town with reindeer to look at - but this sounds interesting too.
